Project Highlights

The Elmira Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) services the Town of Elmira, Ontario, which is located approximately 15 km north of Kitchener/Waterloo. It is owned by the Region of Waterloo and operated by Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). The plant has a Certificate of Approval rated average day flow (ADF) capacity of 7,800 m³/d, and a peak flow capacity of 19,500 m³/d.
To ensure that the plant achieves it effluent objectives several upgrades were required at the plant. These upgrades included the following: increased wet weather flow storage to be provided by the construction of two new equalization tanks; increased waste solids conditioning achieved through the installation of a dewatering centrifuge; miscellaneous improvements to the processes at the plant including pumping upgrades; distribution alterations; tank and channel aeration improvements and digestion and dewatering enhancements.
The upgrades were to be completed under two contracts, A and B. Contract A which was completed in December 2011, had a design, contract administration and site inspection budget of $150,000 and an overall construction cost of $2,700,000. Contract B was a design, contract administration and site inspection
budget of $198,000 and an overall construction budget of $4,800,000. Construction of Contract B commenced in February 2012 and is expected to be completed in January, 2013.
