Project Highlights

Cole Engineering Group Ltd. was retained by Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects on behalf of the University of Toronto to provide civil engineering services in support of the proposed site plan application for the 0.37 ha expansion of the Rotman School of Business Building. Following a stormwater management report, it was found that the proposed development would result in changes to the hydrologic behavior of the site. In order to mitigate the effects, a roof ponding system with green roof technologies and a cistern / rainwater harvesting tank were proposed. Additionally, the project was targeting LEED Silver certification and opportunities were investigated and identified, in order to lessen the environmental impact of the proposed development.

These oppertunities included:
  • Stormwater management – reduction in impervious area, runoff quantity controls, green roofs, bioswales, pervious pavement and rainwater harvesting; and,
  • Water efficiency – rainwater collection, recycled site water, and innovative wastewater technologies.

The challenges associated with this project included maintaining existing services to a heritage building that will become the new home of the Rotman PhD program.
